Are You Enjoying Your Athletic Career or Just Chasing the Next Big Win?

Why Enjoying the Journey Matters for Athletes

As athletes, we’re trained to chase perfection: push harder, break records, and win. It’s the mindset that drives our success. I get it, I’ve lived it too. But that same drive can keep us so focused on the future that we miss the beauty of the journey.

In my recent podcast episode, Andrew perfectly captured this when he said:

"It might feel like a long time, but your career is so short. Just embrace it, try to enjoy it, and that's one of the things that a lot of sports people don't do. They're so fixated on excellence that they never just stop and smell the roses."

This resonates deeply. Why? Because looking back after retirement, many athletes feel regret not because they didn’t achieve enough, but because they were so focused on the next goal that they missed the small, special moments and missed to enjoy every bit of their athletic career journey.

Why it’s so important to appreciate the present, and how that mindset can make your transition out of sports a whole lot easier when the time comes.

The Power of Mindfulness in an Athletic Career

That’s where mindfulness comes in. No, it’s not just about meditation or yoga. Mindfulness is about being present, appreciating the process, and finding joy in the little wins not just the big ones.

When you're always looking ahead, you risk missing out on:

  • Friendships built during training and competition.

  • Lessons learned from challenges.

  • The small victories that make your career truly special.

So, how do you slow down and truly appreciate the journey?

How to Stay Present and Enjoy the Journey of Your Athletic Career

If you’re constantly chasing the next milestone, here are three practical ways to savour your athletic career:

  1. Don’t wait for the big moments to feel proud. Whether it’s mastering a new move, improving your endurance, or crushing a training session, take a moment to celebrate those achievements.

  2. During practice or competition, stay locked in. Pay attention to your form, your breathing, and the challenge in front of you. This will not only improve your performance but also deepen your appreciation for the moment.

  3. It’s easy to focus on outcomes, but the daily effort: the early mornings, tough sessions, and small improvements deserves recognition too.

Ready to Embrace the Journey?

Your athletic career is a chapter, not the whole book. Embracing the present will help you enjoy this chapter fully and prepare you for whatever comes next.

Want to dive deeper? Watch the podcast episode with Andrew for more insights on how athletes can embrace mindfulness and enjoy their careers.

Don’t let the pursuit of excellence rob you of the joy found in the journey. Start appreciating every moment today.
